2. Key Features

PTFE Seat — Chemical Resistance at Economical Cost

Unlike fully PTFE lined butterfly valves which are significantly more expensive due to the complex body lining process, the PTFE seat wafer design places a pure PTFE seat ring in the valve body. The disc has a PTFE seat ring carrier that seals directly against the body PTFE seat. This provides PTFE chemical resistance where it matters — at the sealing interface — at a fraction of the cost of a fully lined valve.

PTFE Seat vs. Rubber Seat — Comparison

Feature PTFE Seat EPDM / NBR Seat
Chemical Resistance Near-universal — acids, alkalis, solvents, oils, chlorine Limited — each rubber type suits specific media only
Max Temperature 180°C 80°C (NBR) — 120°C (EPDM)
Leakage Class IV–VI  Class VI bubble-tight
Wear Resistance Moderate — not for abrasive slurries Good — rubber absorbs particle impact
Best For Chemical, acid, solvent, oil, chlorine, high temperature Water, wastewater, HVAC, general service

Wafer Body Design — Compact & Cost-Effective

  • Sandwiched between two pipe flanges — no additional flange bolts needed beyond those clamping the assembly together
  • Shortest face-to-face dimension of any butterfly valve connection type — saves space in pipe racks and equipment rooms
  • Lightest weight of all butterfly valve body styles — lower material cost, lower shipping cost
  • Compatible with all standard flange drilling patterns

3. Applications

Industry Typical Media Why PTFE Seat?
Chemical Processing Dilute acids (HCl, H₂SO₄), caustic soda, solvents Rubber seats fail rapidly; PTFE handles mild-to-moderate chemicals at lower cost than full PTFE lining
Oil & Gas Crude oil, refined products, natural gas PTFE resists hydrocarbon swelling and chemical attack
Water Treatment (Chemical Dosing) Sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride, PAC, sodium bisulfite Treatment chemicals attack rubber; PTFE seat resists oxidation and chemical degradation
Pharmaceutical Solvent recovery, CIP chemicals, purified water PTFE has low extractables, will not contaminate product
Food & Beverage CIP solutions, acids, alkalis, hot water PTFE is FDA-compliant for food contact (virgin grade)
HVAC & District Energy Hot water, thermal oil, steam condensate PTFE handles 180°C — above rubber seat limits

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the difference between a PTFE seat butterfly valve and a fully PTFE lined butterfly valve?

A PTFE seat valve uses a PTFE ring as the sealing element in an otherwise coated metal valve — the disc is nylon/epoxy coated ductile iron. A fully PTFE lined valve has the entire body interior and disc encapsulated in PTFE/PFA, so no metal contacts the fluid. PTFE seat valves cost 30–50% of fully lined valves and are appropriate for mild-to-moderate chemicals. For concentrated strong acids or ultra-pure media, a fully lined valve should be specified.

Q2: Can the PTFE seat achieve bubble-tight shut-off?

Standard PTFE seat valves achieve Class IV leakage (0.01% of rated Cv), which is sufficient for most on/off isolation applications. For bubble-tight (Class VI / Rate A) shut-off, we offer an energized PTFE seat option with an elastomeric backing ring (EPDM or Viton behind the PTFE, not contacting the fluid). Contact our team to discuss your leakage requirement.

Q3: What chemicals is the PTFE seat NOT suitable for?

PTFE is resistant to virtually all chemicals up to 180°C. The only substances that attack PTFE are molten alkali metals (sodium, potassium), elemental fluorine at elevated temperature and pressure, and chlorine trifluoride. For any other chemical — acid, base, solvent, oxidizing agent — virgin PTFE is chemically inert. Verify compatibility for your specific concentration and temperature with our engineering team.

Q4: Is the wafer body connection suitable for dead-end service?

Wafer butterfly valves are not recommended for dead-end (end-of-line) service because the downstream flange is required to support the valve and resist the reaction force of pipeline pressure. For dead-end service, a lug-type butterfly valve with threaded bolt holes is recommended.

Q5: What is the lead time? Do you offer OEM?

Lead time for standard DN40–DN300 PTFE seat wafer butterfly valves is 1–5 working days from stock. Yes, we offer full OEM service: custom body casting with your brand, custom nameplate data, custom packaging, your logo on the hand lever — all at competitive OEM pricing with flexible MOQ.

Q6: Can the valve be automated?

Yes, all sizes feature an ISO 5211 top mounting pad as standard, compatible with direct mounting of pneumatic actuators, electric actuators, or worm gearboxes. We can supply the complete valve + actuator assembly, fully assembled and tested.
